Machu Picchu via Salkantay

Finally got around to doing a hiking trip that has been on my TODO list for awhile now. At the beginning of May, I flew to Cuzco, Peru for a hiking trip to Machu Picchu . I chose to do the trip via a 4 day/4 night backpacking trip on the Salkantay route (which is the 2nd most popular route) instead of doing the trip via the iconic Inca Trail. The Salkantay trek was more to my liking because: it is more of a traditional hike (less of an exercise in climbing stairs), was easier to book, would have less people on the route, and the Salkantay trek is known for its great scenery.

Big Pine Lakes

Hiking trip to the Big Pine Lakes area in the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada, south of Mammoth Lakes area. We camped out over night near the lake loop trailhead for Palisade Glacier in order to get an early start the next day. Next day started around 5am, hiking with our headlamps. Definitely felt the altitude as the hike started near 8000 ft. At the higher elevations there was more snow and ice which made the trail somewhat treacherous near the top. Close to 20 miles round trip distance and close to 3800 feet of elevation gained, long day of hiking but very rewarding experience especially seeing some nice autumn foliage in color.

Crater Lake

Labor Day weekend hiking trip to Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Not much in lodging was available so I used the town of Klamath Falls as a base of operations. A cold front moved in a couple of days before I arrived and temperatures dropped to freezing at night. It even snowed a little. On the plus side the frost killed most of the mosquitoes. An excellent trip in a very beautiful area.
